Content Writing Process

Who’s the audience? General or specific?

I determine a primary audience, as well as a potential unintended audience. This allows me to remove bias and write from a beginner mindset.

Are there action items? Or something to take away?

For instance, do I need to create an FAQ resource to keep content clean and simple? Do I need to provide a visual, like an infographic? Am I speaking on a specific industry related product or service? Can I perform the proper research or do I need to rely on a SME?

What information do you need to provide the user with to prevent them from having to search for information after reading? I focus on tasks and goals, and write with the user’s objectives in mind. This can include step-by-step instructions for tasks or additional reference materials. Provide context, explain why certain actions are necessary and how they fit into the overall process. Keep content evergreen - I stay away from time-sensitive phrasing.

How can I structure my writing to improve readability?

Many folks read or view content on their mobile phones because they’re on the go, or because staring at a desktop is sometimes not possible. I like to provide bullet points or number content when effective and keep things as concise as possible.

Website - Technical Writing

With the increase in Money Transmission services and cryptocurrency activity, companies required clear guidance on operating within Ohio. To assist both current and prospective licensees, an FAQ and resource bank was developed on the ODOC website.

Consumer - FAQ

As mortgage forbearance periods came to an end, numerous individuals reached out to the ODOC Office of Consumer Affairs with questions. To address their concerns, I developed an FAQ with the assistance of a Consumer Finance Subject Matter Expert.

Media - News Release

News releases can be categorized as technical writing when their purpose is to inform, educate, or instruct an audience, rather than simply announcing or promoting an event. This particular news release concentrated on providing guidance for financial resolutions in 2022.
